Koichi Tohei

Koichi Tohei is one of the founder of Aikido's best students. He is the only Aikido practitioner to have received an actual 10th dan (highest possible rank) certificate. At the present age of 83, he lives and teaches in Tochigi prefecture, Japan.

Tohei had 3 main teachers in his life: Morihei Ueshiba (founder of Aikido), Tetsuju Ogura (Ichikukai instructor) and Tempu Nakamura (Tempukai / Japanese Yoga). When Tohei split from the Aikikai in 1974, he combined the teachings of these 3 teachers when organizing the curriculum and teaching methodology of his Ki no Kenkyukai, or Ki Society.

During a lecture in Nagoya, Japan

Tohei's organization emphasizes breathing exercises and meditation along with Aikido techniques. Techniques are performed in a relaxed and flowing manner. Many dojos also focus on incorporating Aikido principles in daily life.
