Last month the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro experienced tremendous flooding, resulting in the deaths of over 600 victims, among them the mother of BJJ champion and our friend, Pablo Popovitch. The landslide demolished his parents home, resulting in his mother's death and his father's hospitalization in critical condition. Given the current state of health care in Brazil, Pablo has issued a plea for assistance in getting his father moved to a private institution that is better equipped to treat him and aid in his recovery. Pablo has been a Budovideos and Shoyoroll sponsored athlete for some time now, and we hope to help him in his time of need. We will be issuing a limited edition Shoyoroll T-shirt, with $20 of each sale going directly to benefit Pablo and his family as they attempt to recover from this disaster. Even though I have 6 gis already, a 2 of them have shrunk down so much that they aren’t very comfortable to wear. I try to hang dry my gis but sometimes my wife forgets and tosses them in the dryer.  The weirdest thing happened…I just could not get interested in this past season of The Ultimate Fighter. I have been a huge fan of the show since it’s beginning in January 2005. I remember Ryan Bennett calling me up and telling me how great the show was after seeing a screening of the first episode. From that very first show, with Chris Leben meting out his territorial spritzings, I was hooked. And when I first heard that the UFC had announced Jackson and Griffin as the head coaches I was excited.  In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the turtle historically has been seen as a conduit to either recovering guard or getting your guard passed (or possibly being submitted). However, over the last few years a lot of these views have changed as the turtle has become an offensive staging ground for sweeps, reversals, and even some submissions.  To me Penn is the clear favorite here. I know Stevenson has more experience ‘on paper’ (28-7 compared to BJ’s 11-4-1). But come on, BJ Penn submitted Takanori Gomi, Matt Hughes and Jens Pulver and won decisions over Matt Serra and Renzo Gracie. And even in the rare occasions that he lost, the opposition always paid a heavy price (and probably doesn’t look forward to a rematch). Proof of this is in evidence in the two highest profile losses the Prodigy has had – against Matt Hughes (in their second fight) and Georges St. Pierre. In both matches Penn was in complete control early with that brutal, in-the-pocket standup style that he most likely acquired at birth. Their production crew must be weary.   When it comes to instructionals, there are usually two major subcategories that arise: 1. Encyclopedic- including the macro every move under the sun as well as the micro/position specific instructional and 2. Game specific- where the player tries to give insight into why his/her jiu-jitsu works so well. I
don’t think anyone can argue that the UFC® (Ultimate Fighting Championship®) is
the reigning leader in the field of MMA (mixed martial arts)…at the moment.
Since the fall (“purchase”, whatever) of Japan’s Pride organization there has
been no real sustained threat to toppling the UFC’s growing stature. In the US
they dominate the ticket sales and the airways.
