Wang Xiangzhai founded Yiquan after mastering Xingyiquan (martial art emphasizing form and mind) and travelling all around China (including Shaolin) learning from many of the masters of the time. In the 1920's, after becoming disillusioned with martial arts training, he formed Yiquan and emphasized internal strength, being made up of the right balance of tension and relaxation, and perfect body mechanics. The path of Yiquan, Wang said, would change clumsy into agile, and weak into strong.
Wang’s top student and designated successor, MasterYao Zhongxun, made Yiquan more accessible to the modern martial artist by explaining in modern scientific terms. Master Yao Zhongxun can be seen in the bonus footage on 2 of the Yiquan DVDs. Instruction on the DVDs is provided by the 2nd successor of Yiquan, the founder’s son Master Yao ChengRong. Yiquan is also known in Japan as Taikiken – started by Kenichi Sawaii an accomplished Japanese martial artist who studied under Wang in China – after first losing a challenge match. One of Sawaii’s more well known students was Mas Oyama who went on to found the Kyokushin Karate organization.
In his 2nd DVD, Japanese Taikiken instructor Michiyo Shimada shows in clear detail how to do "standing zen" properly. Shimada further explains how to apply your stance and body movement to deal with an attacker. The instruction culminates in Shimada
