Shinto is the native religion of Japan. Many of the founders of Japan's martial traditions were strongly influenced by Shinto. The name even appears in some ryuha's names, such as "Shinto Muso Ryu Jojutsu", "Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu", and others.

Aikido student's might recognize some of the traditional Shinto purification exercises as Aikido founder, Morihei Ueshiba, took these exercises from Shinto.
