If you know anything about me, you know that I am a stickler for learning and mastering the fundamentals. I don’t care what it is you’re doing, you better know the basics. I discussed this somewhat when mentioning my Foundations of Footwork DVD. Basics are the most crucial element to building a superior fighting machine. There is simply no other way around that fact.

Are you a fan of MMA? I’m sure you get excited when you see these wicked knockouts. Some of these guys though throw their punches from left field, wild haymakers and what have you, yet when they land they certainly carry a lot of power. Guys fall over like a tree that just got cut down. There are a lot of ways to combat that. Footwork, angles, blocking, parrying, etc. Those are all defensive tactics. What if I were to tell you that there is an offensive way to thwart any haymaker punch? To thwart and capitalize on any opening that your opponent may have while he’s attempting to launch these punches?

Let me ask you this.

Have you ever been at a picnic and you’re sitting out with your friends and your trying to have a good time, and the mosquitoes and the flies keep biting you? Or how about when you’re trying to get work done and someone’s always interfering with you? I could give you tons of examples of being annoyed. Let’s take it one step further. You know you should change the oil in your car but you’re too busy doing other things and you don’t think it’s really going to hurt you if you don’t change it right away. You do this enough times, and then you can have serious engine problems. And just like when the flies or mosquitoes are out to get you, you tend to lose your temper when things that annoy you get out of hand.

You see in boxing, one of the things that can be really annoying to your opponent is not allowing him to get set to launch any kind of offensive motion. The secret to doing this many times is an effective jab. Jabs can be like that pesky mosquito always landing on you and distorting what it is you’re trying to do. Or it could be like that engine that you ignored until it was too late and it blew up on you. The jab can really do some damage in certain instances.

Now while the mosquito may seem very simplistic in nature, a mere insect, it can certainly do something that you cannot do. It can fly! And good luck catching an actual fly unless you were trained by Mr. Miyagi. You see the point I’m trying to make is this. A true jab artist can do things that the wild haymaker punch throwers cannot do. And a true jab artist can be as difficult to hit as a fly is to catch. But the simple fact of the matter is, learning to throw a proper jab takes an education and enlightenment.

The Theory of 5,000

Some scientists have offered that to master a technique properly so that it becomes a habit takes 5000 perfect repetitions. Scientists also said at one point that we could not break the sound barrier. I am here to tell you that to truly master something takes far more than 5000 proper repetitions. And herein lies the problem with many fighters of today. While they have talent and toughness, many of them lack patience. You see, to me 5000 proper repetitions is just an appetizer. And if you have a bad appetizer it can ruin your meal. So if you are practicing improperly and badly it’s going to ruin the main course, which in your case is being a devastating fighter.

Why This DVD?

I’m going to let you in on something. When I was young and I used the spar, I did not like to get hit. I was gifted with good speed, both foot and hand speed. But the one thing I did seem to lack when I was really young was strength. Sometimes even blocking a punch would throw me off balance and it was hard for me to ward off my opponent. Then one of my coaches told me that I really needed to work on my jab. And that was one of those light bulb moments when I finally realized that I was going about things the wrong way. And that the shortest distance between two points is always a straight line. And that jab was my straight-line.

Today I see a lot of fighters that are lacking in the one thing that could really set them apart from others. And that is a thorough understanding of the basics, and proper application of core techniques. I’m here to tell you that one of the most important punches, if not the most important punch, is the jab. And frankly, I don’t see a lot of fighters throwing a good jab. To the untrained eye it may look like nothing more than a straight punch. But there is so much more. How you launch it, the chain of muscular movements, the impact point, and what have you. There’s simply not a lot of people that seem to get it.

Well I’m here to tell you that without a doubt knowing how to jab properly and effectively can be a game changer. It can unbalance your opponent. It can frustrate your opponent. And it can create openings not just for other strikes but also for takedowns as well. Anyone who was foolish enough to not spend the time learning to jab deserves all the heartbreak and disappointments that will come their way.

Let me state some things for you:

It’s more than just throwing out your arm. This DVD teaches you the proper way to make a fist, contact points, body shifting, elbow and shoulder positioning, punching with movement, and much more. You need to learn the mechanics, structure, and application of perhaps the most important punch in boxing and MMA; the jab.

On my DVD you will learn:

  • The proper shoulder position
  • How to keep your face safely protected
  • The turn
  • Driving from the earth
  • Feinting
  • Different types of jabs
  • Punching off of movement
  • plus much more….

I kid you not when I tell you that the jab is an important piece in a great fighter’s arsenal and every successful boxer’s career. Yes some do it better than others, but there has yet to be a champion that didn’t value the importance of this simple yet sophisticated punch.

I spent countless hours in and out of the gym working on just this one punch. It has never let me down.
