A Quest to Define the BJJ Fundamentals (Originally appeared in Jiu-Jitsu Style Magazine)   Advice that is often heard in jiu jitsu schools around the globe is to “Focus on the fundamentals”. It is hard to find fault with this advice and most students nod their heads in agreement with this seemingly wise wisdom. The problem is… what are the fundamentals? I’ve traveled to countless BJJ schools across 4 continents and I have found that while there are many similarities to the way techniques are performed, there are also many subtle differences. Additionally, I found that some schools focused more...

BJJ, Self Defense -

Longtime martial arts practitioner and instructor Bjorn Friedrich, recently released a new instructional video on effective street self defense titled Control the Chaos and we recently caught up with him to get some of his thoughts. So here are Bjorn's thoughts on self defense philosophy and myths: My Philosophy of Self Defense My philosophy of self defense goes far beyond fighting techniques. Each week we had guests on who would share stories and techniques with us. This particular week I wanted to get two of my friends on to settle their beef - Eddie Bravo & Shawn Williams. You see, Shawn has a guard, aptly named the Williams Guard. Eddie Bravo has his Rubber Guard system. There was one particular move - "The London" as Eddie calls...

Nic Gregoriades is a well-known Jiu-Jitsu instructor with the unique title of being Roger Gracie's first black belt. Since Nic just came out with a new fitness instructional called BudoFit, I wanted to ask him a few questions about fitness related to jiu-jitsu and longevity. Jake: You’ve had a long history in jiu-jitsu. It’s natural as we mature that the way we roll and practice changes. Some people become more efficient with their movements, some limit their rolling. How is your jiu-jitsu practice now compared to years past? Nic: As I approach 40, I have definitely changed the way I...
