Dr. K. Zughari’s book is very distinguished from a number of books – researching the given question. Why? There are several causes, but the main cause is, it is some kind of a link between two extreme points of view to ninpo and ninjutsu, harmoniously uniting polar opinions of skeptical historians and real experts of this obscure and often incorrectly understood art.
Such a work became possible thanks to unique personality of author of this book, his perfect knowledge both the object of reserach, and Japanese language on the high level, a man, uniting serious scientist – orientalist and the real expert of ninjutsu throughout many years (and first-hand) in one person.
On the one hand, Dr Zughary is a scientist with the world name, whose lectures at the most prestigious universities of the world use the big popularity; he is the winner of prestigious awards and the author of numerous works in research of history and practice of the Japanese fighting arts published not only in English and French, but also in the Japanese language in the most popular periodicals devoted to questions budo and bujutsu. He possesses the unique collection of rare ancient manuscripts densyo and makimono of various schools, and also extensive (and practically complete) library of works by the Japanese historians and researchers on hihjutsu and bujutsu, collected by him in the course of long-term researching work in Japan.
That is why represented book is rather serious historical work, based on real documents and most respectable Japanese historians’ researches.
On the other hand, he is personal pupil of one of the leading Japanese masters of Bujinkan, shihan Isijuka Tetsuji, and also pupil and translator of soke Hatsumi, many times talking personally to him on questions of history, theory and practice of ninjutsu. He also has rare possibility and thrust to study and copy original document, inherited by soke Hatsumi from his teacher, Takamatsu Toshitsugu. Besides, Kacem Zughari is personally familiar to numerous most famous Japanese masters of koryu bujutsu - Tanaka Fumon, Ivai Tsukuo, Kuroda Tetsuzan etc. This all gave to author a possibility to fill the book with profound philosophical and especially pragmatic conclusions about the ninja world, the real ninjutsu practice, both its true sense and the purposes - in Middle Ages as well as nowadays. The book contains also translation of authentic ninja documents with the author’s comments, their profoundness and quality proceed from possessing Japan language and profound understanding of the theme of translation.
You shall find in Dr. Zughary’s book no techniques, no tactics, no advises about training; but this was not the aim of this work.
The main theme of all this books is simple and accessible explanation with numerous documentary examples from primary sources, WHAT IS ninjutsu, HOW and WHY it is practicing today, as well as hundreds years ago … And this theme is reveled for 100 %.
Without exaggeration, this work is one of the best and most serious books on the essence of ninjutsu, written by non-Japanese nowadays.
NOTE: This is the Russian language edition.
