Mastering the Saddle 5 DVD Set by Scott Sonnon

In Mastering the Saddle, USA National Sambo Team Coach and Champion, Scott Sonnon, who earned the sport’s most coveted athletic distinction as Distinguished Master of Sport, reveals the signature “Saddle” techniques that have made him one of the most respected leg lock coaches in the world. With 101 step-by-step moves, including entries, sweeps, passes, recounters, and a host of submissions, this series is a must for all competitors searching for an edge over the competition.

Sambo prides itself on fast-wrestling - with only 60 seconds of groundfighting permitted. In mixed martial arts, however, these locks only work 20% of the time and aren’t worth sacrificing quality position. As a result, Scott Sonnon modified traditional Sambo to become a “lower-half” positional approach so that fighters could both strike and defend against strikes, could maintain positional dominance, and could easily transition from one submission to the next in a chess-like fashion, as Brazilian Jiujitsu has become known for in the “upper-half” game.

As more details of the Saddles are published and more people begin training it, it will flash like wild fire across the MMA community, as they offer incredibly greater success in mixed martial arts than traditional Sambo, and soon will become the most useful of the many accepted variations in the leg attack game.

I really had super high expectations for this DVD set as the concept of systematically developing a lower-half game that is as nuanced as traditional BJJ top-half game is admirable. Unfortunately, the material presented is not all that good. I have been drilling and studying non stop, but saddle variants do not pop up very often against live opponents, and the entries that were provided were average at best. Also, the production of the instructionals was average as well, the shoulder mics made for a lot of static and echoing during demonstrations. Overall, I would give this a 2.5 out of 5 as there is a lot of stuff on the discs, but so much seems like what I call "fantasy moves". For a superior leglock training set, check out Igor Yakimov's leglock set. In my opinion it is the best out there.

lots of leglocks. many seemed of little use though because they are so difficult to apply in a real situation. just my opinion though.

I really don't believe this DVD to be as bad some people make it out to be.
I've found the saddle to be quite useful at the BJJ gym I go to. Once I'm able to sink in the full saddle (which I admit can be difficult) people that are higher belts than me have quite a bit more difficultly breaking it since it's foreign to them.

Overall I think the Scott Sonnon's philosophy and product here is very good. The thing is it really takes alot of practice get the moves down and actually implementing them on a resisting opponent.

I'd suggest adding the saddle to your arsonal as something you can transition to. I enjoy setting up with very traditional leg attacks (something i can scramble out of) and locking in my full saddle as things progress.

In short I highly recommend blending it with something else for a stronger leg lock game.

Was so glad to get this set at first until I watched it. Scott Sonnon talks and talks and talks some more. If he would just shut up and teach. Somebody said Ryan Hall talks to much with his 50-50 Guard that I also have but he's mute compared to Scott Sonnon. Rule of thumb when teaching or doing a seminar. Demonstrate but don't talk too much. Would like to get other instructionals by Scott Sonnon but if he's going to just talk and talk why bother.
I'm going to go back and watch his DVDs again on the merit of Chuck's rating. Will report back.
