Radical Guard Volume 1 with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Joao Crus is a DVD that contains 16 techniques from both the closed and open guard. All of the techniques are taught with the gi and how to use the gi to your advantage. The first 5 techniques, for example, all start with the same set up. Joao shows a basic way of wrapping your opponents gi skirt to not only trap his arm, but to choke your opponent as well. The techniques there after build upon from the first technique and has different variations due to how your opponent may react. In the end of this series you start from your closed guard, set up the choke, sweep your opponent, and finish the choke from the mounted position.

The majority of the DVD follows this same format in a sense. Joao will teach you a variety of techniques that can build off of each other. You may start from the closed guard as in the first series of techniques, you might start from the open guard, or you will start from situations such as when your opponent is passing your guard. Again you will find very similar patterns amongst the moves in which the setup or finish are the same or slight variations from them.

This is a perfect DVD for someone who is trying to develop a guard game. Since the moves tie together in a logical sequence, you can make some effective training drills from what Joao teaches. For example, you can start off with the basic setups in the series and have your partner go through the various counters and resistances. It’s a great way to develop muscle memory.

The total run time for this DVD is around 38 minutes. The audio and video are clear and Joao does an excellent job at explaining everything that is taught. Joao and his assistant also wear different color gis, so you can easily see arm and leg placement of each person.

Great dvd that lags a little from production issues. For example the first technique (wich is supposed to be an intro and then right on to technique number one) disappered completely while they edited the dvd!! (How did you manage that???) Its all very private budget but the video is clear enough allthough the audio could have been louder. That said the actual techniques are all excellent with great care for detail. The first series for "gi over arm wrap to armbar and loopchoke" from closed guard are worth the dvd in it self.
