Guan Yu, the famous general of the Three Kingdoms, was good at Yanyue Dao. Because Guan Yu is fond of reading Spring and Autumn and practiced the Spring and Autumn ceremony, so the posterity called it Spring and Autumn Yanyue Dao, or Spring and Autumn Falchion. The edge of the Spring and Autumn Falchion is circular as a half-moon. The Falchion is broad about fifty-five centimeters; the back is tooth-like with a hole for tying red tassel. There is a guard of broadsword between the base and the hilt of the Falchion. There is a two centimeters bronze cover on the hilt connecting with the guard of sword, called Dingshou; and an iron halbert in the end of the hilt. The basic technique are hack, chop, lop, support, cloud, hitch, block, sweep, hold, carry, pluck, press, twist, grind, stir, follow, fan, and so on, and it contains some usages of the end of the falchion, too. There are figure movements, such as, entwine waist, entwine neck, cloud before the chest, brandish back, and millstones circles, superadding the various of footworks, stances, turning over, it forms a routine, as the saying, sword moves as wandering dragon and broadsword moves as fierce tiger. When practicing Spring and Autumn Falchion, there must be a force as fierce tiger pouncing on sheep. Every form must be powerful and stern. The speed of the whole movement should be fast as cutting the knot. In practicing, the movement of the back, edge, guard of sword, and end of the falchion must be clear.
