Furin Kazan was based on the bestselling Japanese novel of the same name (sometimes spelled Furin Kazah), written by Yasushi Inove. Toshiro Mifune plays (as ever) a 16th century Samurai, hired to advise a warlord. When his employer fails to heed his advice, Mifune is compelled to kill a rival despot without permission. Both Mifune and his master fall in love with the daughter of the slain rival. She despises Mifune for his justified action against her father and chooses the warlord. Mifune drifts out of this situation, and is later killed in battle. Released in the US as Under the Banner of the Samurai and Samurai Banners, Furin Kazan was put together by Toshiro Mifune's own production company.
