By current-day standards, even the action may seem a little "stilted" but nonetheless, in its day, this kind of action brought crowds of thousands to their feet. There are recorded incidents of broken bones and split eyelids as well "orthodontic alterations" as a result of these demonstrations. A certain very well-known Japanese instructor was, on more than one occasion, heard to utter, "Sorry" just as he was about to execute a certain part of the demonstration.
