Morihei Ueshiba & Aikido 1: Aiki Budo DVD

This exciting DVD showcases the prewar Aiki Budo of Morihei Ueshiba, Founder of Aikido. The program begins with a documentary written and produced by Aikido Journal Editor-in-chief Stanley Pranin that traces the life of the Founder from his boyhood in Tanabe through his retirement to Iwama in 1942. Morihei's early martial arts training, his study of Daito-ryu aikijujutsu under the famous Sokaku Takeda, his involvement with the Omoto religious sect led by Onisaburo Deguchi, and a history of Ueshiba?s Kobukan Dojo are presented.

This documentary also includes video and audio recordings of several prewar Aikido figures commenting on their remembrances of the Aikido Founder. Among those who appear are Kisshomaru Ueshiba, Gozo Shioda, Rinjiro Shirata, Takako Kunigoshi, and Kiyoshi Nakakura.

1935 Asahi News Film

Of the surviving documents of the prewar era, perhaps the most important is the 1935 film of Morihei shot in Osaka at the Asahi News Dojo. We present this amazing treasure in its entirety for the first time on DVD. One is struck by the modernity of many of the techniques and the "ki no nagare" like style of execution.

Morihei demonstrates numerous suwariwaza, hanza handachi (hanmi handachi), tachiwaza, multiple attacks, and sword and bayonet techniques. His partners are Shigemi Yonekawa and Tsutomu Yukawa. There are also brief appearances by Takuma Hisa and Rinjiro Shirata. Most of the techniques are advanced and performed in a flowing style building up to a spectacular multiple attack finale!

very unique look at aikido in it's earliest days. O sensei's technique is as amazing as ever. He is very young and in the peak of his physical power.

This video serves, with the Noma dojo photographs, as an important documentation of the technique of the founder in the years in which his art was undergoing the transition from aikijujutsu to modern aikido.

Filmed at the Asahi Newspaper Dojo of Hisa Takuma, who later became a senior exponent under Sokaku Takeda, the art Morihei is displaying here is prewar aiki budo with strong entry and atemi in evidence.

Still I was surprised not see an art which more closely resembled the Daito-ryu of the Takumakai. Morihei's singular interpretation of the art is already in evidence here even at this early date.

Pranin's documentary at the beginning of the video is quite informative and is in fact longer than the footage itself which is about 15 minutes long. The film quality can be indistinct (washed out looking)and the timing not entirely true to life however this would be true of many films from this era. In many ways it adds to the 'atmosphere' of the clips.

Much has been said about the abilities of the founder and the nature of the early 'hard-style' of aikibudo. Here one need not rely on the opinions and stories of others but may view and judge by what they see for themselves.

An important acquisition.
