Rating: very unique look at aikido in it's earliest days. O sensei's technique is as amazing as ever. He is very young and in the peak of his physical power.

Rating: This video serves, with the Noma dojo photographs, as an important documentation of the technique of the founder in the years in which his art was undergoing the transition from aikijujutsu to modern aikido. Filmed at the Asahi Newspaper Dojo of Hisa Takuma, who later became a senior exponent under Sokaku Takeda, the art Morihei is displaying here is prewar aiki budo with strong entry and atemi in evidence. Still I was surprised not see an art which more closely resembled the Daito-ryu of the Takumakai. Morihei's singular interpretation of the art is already in evidence here even at this early date. Pranin's documentary at the beginning of the video is quite informative and is in fact longer than the footage itself which is about 15 minutes long. The film quality can be indistinct (washed out looking)and the timing not entirely true to life however this would be true of many films from this era. In many ways it adds to the 'atmosphere' of the clips. Much has been said about the abilities of the founder and the nature of the early 'hard-style' of aikibudo. Here one need not rely on the opinions and stories of others but may view and judge by what they see for themselves. An important acquisition. Please sign in to add your own review. |
