In other reviews I have submitted to the Budovideos.com, I have shied away from recommending the purchase of two-disc DVD sets. As a connoisseur of Shooto, I prefer a DVD that contains a fight card in its entirety rather than a compilation of a particular year's best bouts. Such a preference stems from my interest in the 3 or 4 bouts that aren't selected for the aforementioned compilations because they are deemed pedestrian.

Despite such a tendency, I cannot recommend purchasing this DVD because every fight on the 12.16.01 event was included of the Shooto 2001 two-disc DVD set. In the past, the standard practice has been to select the 3 or 4 best bouts from a particular event and include them on the double-disc compilation DVD sets. Even if the card was a year-end show (as this show was)—which in the past has been Shooto's largest show of the year—no more than five bouts from a single event were included on a compilation.

Objectively, this DVD offers a handful of good fights--the best of which is SATO vs. GOMI. The 154 lbs. title fight between SATO and GOMI is very good, but I found the relevance of the match-up and the back-story leading up to the fight more interesting than the resulting in-ring product. Unless you cannot afford the price of the Shooto 2001 two-disc DVD set, I would refrain from purchasing this DVD.

For those that lack knowledge regarding Shooto history, here is a synopsis of the events that preceded the fight between SATO and GOMI.

In 2001, CAOL UNO vacated the 154 lbs. title for the lucrative confines of the octagon. With UNO's exodus to the UFC and the need to crown a champion for Shooto's premier weight division, it was determined that SATO and GOMI, two highly-ranked welterweight competitors and arguably Shooto's most popular fighters at the time, would fight for the throne abdicated by UNO. The problem was that both fighters represented K'z Factory. To avoid any conflict of interest, GOMI left K'z Factory and joined Kiguchi Dojo.
