This is part of the Nihon Kobudo series which documents nearly all of the Japanese traditional martial arts. This rare documentary and demonstration video covers the history and katas of Jikishinkage Ryu. Jikishinkage Ryu is an intense style of kenjutsu with distinctive breathing and footwork. Featured in this film is Omori Sogen who established the Chozen Ji Zen temple in Hawaii. Katas demonstrated in this video are:

Those interested in Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu, might be interested to know that Jiki Shinkage Ryu is one of the sword arts that Sokaku Takeda studied.

Founded circa 1570 by Matsuno Bizen no kami Naokatsu (1467-1524). There is no single current recognized soke. Practice weapons used in Jikishinkage Ryu are a heavy furibo, a large bokuto, a fukuro shinai, and a habiki (metal sword).

Many may be attracted to buying this video who have heard that this art was one of the major sword schools practised by Sokaku Takeda.

Reputedly, Sokaku spent some time as a live-in student of Kenkichi Sakakibara, headmaster of the Jikishinkage Ryu and considered to be one of the most famous and skilled swordsmen of the era.

It came as a shock to me to see the kata themselves. This style was practised by many famous duelists in the 19th and so I expected to see a very pragmatic set of kata performed with much emphasize on attack rather than counters.

Instead I found a series of very ascetic and enigmatic kata where the true intention of many of the movements is not readily understandable by an outsider to the ryuha.

Still the kata are themselves fascinating, as are the breathing, stepping and seemingly meditative movements. It also features a rather chilling kiai!

This is a very interesting ryu however unlike many of the videos from the Nihon-no-Kobudo series I really felt the need for English subtitles and further explanation in order to get a deeper understanding of the significance of what I was viewing.
