Region Codes are software locks installed on the DVD disc to prevent people from taking advantage of the differential release schedules of movies. Therefore some DVDs manufactured in Japan for example, will not play in DVD players sold in the United states and vice versa. Japan and England fall into what is known as Region 2 and the United States falls into Region 1. If the DVD is marked as "Region 0" or "Region Free", it will play on any player.
