In 1952 Fujito Koga was traveling and training with Noriaki Inoue, nephew of Morihei Ueshiba the founder of Aikido. Inoue-doshu went on to develop Shin'ei Taido as a physical manifestation of universal affinity, in accordance with his understanding of the Omoto-kyo.Koga-sensei's Fuji-ryu displays no such lofty aspirations.
In this program, current headmaster Koshiro Tanaka presents a powerful system of self-defense against knife, sword, and unarmed attack. Techniques are shown at full speed and in slow motion from multiple angles. Tanaka-sensei patiently explains the key points of each technique, although English subtitles would have been helpful in understanding the details. I pitty the knife-wielding fool who might encounter a Fuji-ryu practicioner, who might hand the weapon back with arm detached. Keep the linament nearby. This program hurts just watching it. Where do I join?
The scenes of outdoor training and a Q&A session are niceties, but again, without the benifit of subtitles they become spacers between the action.
In Oct.2009 Tanaka-sensei introduced Hiko-ryu Goshindo Kodachi, available as items 13617 & 13707.
