Kanei Iwatsuri had a long and severe training history under Masahiko Kimura. He was born in 1944 and started his training in 1955 at the age of 11. In 1966 he became a policeman in Hyogo, Japan and during the years 1966 and 1967 he was undefeated in the Police Judo Taikais. In 1969, Iwatsuri was champion of a Sambo tournement in Moscow, Russia. In 1971, he was the All Japan Senshuken Judo Taikai champion.
