Ricardo De La Riva on Memorable Matches, DLR Guard, Japan & More!

By Budo Jake February 18, 2014 3272 Views No comments

You know you've made your mark on the BJJ world if you have a move named after you. I'm not talking about some random submission, but a move that has become a fundamental part of the art. The De La Riva guard is a position that you'll see over and over nowadays. Competitors like the Mendes Brothers, Samuel Braga, Michael Langhi, Keenan Cornelius, Cobrinha and countless others rely on this guard. I've never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. De La Riva as he rarely comes to the states, but I sent a few quesitons down to my friend Lineu Oliveira who conducted the interview. Read, learn, and appreciate one of the legends of BJJ - Ricardo De La Riva - Carlson Gracie black belt, great competitor & instructor, and creator of the De La Riva guard!

Will Kettlebell Training Help My BJJ?

By Rik Brown January 28, 2014 2312 Views No comments

Rik Brown teaching Kettlebell movements to Romulo Barral

Many who practice BJJ have thought that going to a gym to lift weights would bring about a magical change in their Jiu-jitsu. That in just a few short months, membership at a local “Fitness Center” would be the catalyst that would shoot them up through the belt ranks and have them knocking on the door to Black Belt status.

Last month, Vladislav Koulikov's new instructional series "Sambo Jiu-jitsu Fusion" was released. The set features throws, takedowns, groundwork and leglocks that work GREAT in a BJJ or Submission grappling setting. Those tough Russians know a thing or two about fighting!

Some Half Guard, a little Tornado guard and an epic Mohawk.

By Budo Dave January 23, 2014 1989 Views 4 comments

It’s been almost 7 years since the first Nogi Worlds, and it’s nice to see these two warriors still competing and dominating in the Jiu Jitsu Game.

When you think of Lucas Leite, the first that usually comes to your mind is a guy with a tricky half guard and a guy that is willing to go up against virtually anyone. When you think of Cyborg, you think of his high altitude Tornado sweeps. I had totally forgotten that Cyborg would also rock a badass mowhawk!

If you want to tornado sweep like Cyborg, check out his 3 Vol. DVD set here!

Getting Sponsored in BJJ - the eBook!

By Budo Jake January 11, 2014 2839 Views No comments

One of the most common questions I get asked is about sponsorship. BJJ instructors and athletes all around the world want to represent a brand and there is a lot of confusion as to how it all works. So for the past two months I've been pouring everything I know about BJJ sponsorships into an e-book and it's now available!

Another reason for women to train BJJ?

By Budo Dave January 10, 2014 1374 Views No comments

We all know that BJJ is great for self defense and most of it that train see the benefit for women to learn Jiu Jitsu as well. Unfortunately, a lot of women are hesitant to train BJJ for so many obvious reasons.

The crew at Ocean County Jiu Jitsu came up with this clever and well produced commercial spot that should help convince women to take up an interest in BJJ. The commercial is well done but the approach might be somewhat controversial. Take a look for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments below.

The Pioneer: 9th degree red belt Carley Gracie

By Budo Jake January 9, 2014 5981 Views 1 comments

Carley Gracie

Last month I had the rare opportunity to go to a seminar with a red belt. Red belts are "living treasures" of BJJ and they have a wealth of knowledge to share. The red belt I am talking about today is Carley Gracie, #11 of Carlos Gracie Sr's 21 children.

BJJ Inversion Drill

By Budo Jake January 7, 2014 5984 Views 1 comments

The beauty of BJJ is the constant innovation. When high level guys fight each other, they are forced to develop new skills. Competition breeds innovation. One aspect of BJJ that has become more common in recent years is the art of inverting.
