Draculino wraps up new DVD

January 15th, 2009

Vinicius “Draculino” stopped in earlier this week to shoot his new BJJ technique DVD, and with him he brought fellow Gracie Barra black belt and 5 time world champion Romulo Barral. While we can’t give too much information away about the DVD, we can tell you that it promises to be one of the most interesting, and unique technique DVDs you’re likely to come across. With the amount of techniques we shot the editing will take a little while so the set won’t be available until early Spring, but we can promise you, it’s worth the wait.

Average Joe’s MMA Preview: UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson

January 14th, 2009

The UFC kicks off 2009 in a big way with UFC 93 emanating from Dublin, Ireland. “93” marks the first time the UFC has been back in Ireland since UFC 72: Victory on June 16th, 2007, and with them they bring along former Middleweight champion Rich “Ace” Franklin (who headlined the last Ireland event against Yushin Okami), and former PRIDE Welterweight, and Middleweight champion Dan “Hendo” Henderson in a clash that has been years in the making. Also thrown into the equation is the fact that UFC President Dana White has made it clear that the winner of this fight will be the coach for “Team USA” opposite Michael Bisping’s “Team UK” on the 9th season of The Ultimate Fighter. Franklin has been very public with his hesitation to assume coaching duties again (he served as a coach on the show’s second season opposite Matt Hughes), whereas Henderson has said it would be an honor to represent his country yet again (as he did in the Olympic games). I wonder if this will serve as any added motivation for either fighter?

The Judo Worlds, the Bar in Grappling Events…

January 1st, 2009

For quite some time, Fighting Films has produced the World, European, and Olympic championships for the sport of judo.  Though all of the events have been incredibly well edited, shot, and produced, none can compare to the two most recent editions:  The World Judo Championships 2007 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the 2006 Judo World Championships from Paris, France.

While previous events have included both the team, weight class, and open titles on a two DVD set, things changed in 2006 and 07 when the events were broken up and split onto three DVDs.  The result was more than pleasing.

Does Jiu-Jitsu University meet expectations?

November 21st, 2008

With all of the hype surrounding Saulo Ribeiro’s newest book, Jiu-Jitsu University, you would think that its a Nintendo Wii or Tickle Me Elmo.  But is the book worth it?  Does it live up to the exceedingly high expectations?

Before I review, here’s a warning - I’m a little biased, I’ve known Budo Blog contributor and Jiu-Jitsu University co-author, Kevin Howell for years, but I’m going to be objective.  I just hope he doesn’t armlock me when he reads this.

Gokor Chivichyan in the Budovideos Studio

October 28th, 2008

Cryo Productions just wrapped up shooting of a massive new DVD set all on leg attacks with none other than the leglock master himself - Gokor Chivichyan. Gokor’s training partners weren’t safe in any position - whether standing, in side control - even in the mount. Gokor’s leg attacks come from unexpected angles and are as painful as hell!

After countless hours and 4 different training partners, the set has been completely filmed and is now being edited. There is no doubt that this will be THE BEST instructional set on leglocks ever made from what I saw!
